TRAVELING ROOTS

You can travel too!

Walk in the Footsteps of your Ancestors ...

My wife Shirley and I have been traveling since 1970 - enjoying our travels, but I know that there are many genealogists who would like to travel, but are afraid and/or don't know how or where to start.  That is why, I decided to create this page.  It contains links to background information you will need -- once you have decided to take the plunge and visit your roots.  What an experience it can be!

There is a bibliography (information on Bohemia, Moravia, Ukraine, Warsaw, Poland and more) that was compiled to guide readers to materials on Jewish travel
http://www.ushmm.org/research/library/
bibliography/travel/right.htm

"Windows In Time" - a summer's journey to Europe and the Middle East in 1913 - an exhibition at the Museum of Family History of Henry Nathanson's travels with his parents.
http://www.museumoffamilyhistory.com/exhibitions-wit-nathanson.htm

I do not have any personal connection to any source links below -- I am merely bringing these links to your attention.  If they fail you, you will have to deal with the source directly, and if they are of great advantage in making and performing your ultimate travel plans, I would like to know so that I can share your experiences with others who intend to follow in your footsteps.  You can always send me an e-mail to JWebindex@gmail.com

Before you take your trip, and especially if you are planning on doing research, Joseph Fibel made a good suggestion: "Collect your data first and identify archives to visit well in advance, notify the archive of your arrival and ask them to have the material you will need.  You will be far ahead."

360 Cities - explore the world from your computer with maps and photos.  Limited amount of cities are currently available but I am sure it will grow to offer many more

Packing Suggestions - it's true.  We have traveled Europe with just two rolling bags plus a carry-on bag for medications.  Here are some suggestions we can share with you:

1. Pack half of each other's clothes in the other's suitcase. Pack by category: day, evening, etc.

2. Put a copy of your itinerary inside the luggage in case the luggage gets lost and send one to your kids.

3. Bring small bills for immediate currency needs and then use ATMs for more serious money or credit cards.

4. Try to sleep on overnight flights and avoid heavy eating or drinking caffeine the night before and when flying.

5. US settings for cell phones are 800, while Europe is 900 and 1800 MHz.  You can rent a cell phone or use public phones.

6. If you are diabetic, don't worry about refrigerating Insulin.  It retains full potency for months or even years at room temperature.

Passports - it takes 10 weeks -- or longer- to get a passport.  Even the expedited passport service, which requires an additional $60 fee plus overnight shipping costs, has slid from two weeks to four weeks or "possibly longer," according to the State Department.

Consider joining the International Association for Medical Assistance to travelers if you have any medical concerns

Medications - there is a ban on liquids and gels in containers larger than 3 ounces, carrying medical supplies and medicines has been confusing.  The TSA allows liquid prescription medications and some over the counter liquids if they are necessary for your disability or medical condition.  If they are in containers larger than 3 ounces, pack them separately from that quart size plastic bag.  You must declare them to the TSA officer and you may have to take your medications out of your carry on to show the TSA agent

Money - Travelers checks should be exchanged at banks for cash.  There are a few ATM machines in Minsk and there are places that will accept credit cards including many banks, stores and restaurants.  The currency is the Belarusian ruble (BR).  The ruble is the money used in Belarus.  Warning, be careful of street people approaching you to exchange rubles for dollars.  You risk big problems with the police.  Bring one dollar bills along with $20 dollar bills.   They both are quite acceptable currency.  There are legitimate currency exchanges opened in larger cities.   You can also get rubles from a bank that accepts credit cards as there are no ATM machines.  I ran into an experience in Ukraine, that may be happening in Belarus.  It has to do with exchanging $100 bills for rubles.  Unless the $100 are fairly new, the banks, and the street exchangers frown on accepting them, especially the older bills.  Those were easier to copy.  I brought mostly $20 bills along with many singles.

Personal Services available - Anatoly Neverov offers his services for a variety of considerations of a traveler, including providing an invitation to visit Belarus, a guide, delivering parcels, and a whole lot more at his web site http://belarus.virtualave.net/neverov.htm

I do not know this person personally and cannot make any recommendation, but should you use him and are satisfied with his work, please notify as such

There are four direct trains from Minsk to Grodno.  There is also a direct bus route connecting these towns.  It takes about five hours by bus to Grodno.  It is also possible to go from Poland to Grodno and Minsk from Poland, but it is more expensive and takes longer. Train Schedules can be searched at Deutsche Bahn web site

Visa Information - you will need an invitation to visit Belarus, along with a current visa.  Contact the nearest Belarusian Embassy for obtaining your invitation. A phone call first to the Embassy would be in order to verify that you will be invited.   A Visa is required as is an "Invitation" to visit Belarus from a friend, business, hotel. You can request an Express single-entry visa, which can be processed within an hour, but costs about $120.  The regular visa processing time takes longer.

Canada

Passport Information - The Canadian government has simplified passport renewal. A new process is offered that makes it easier to renew passports. Since August 15,
2007, qualified applicants no longer have to submit documentary evidence of citizenship, supplementary identification or a guarantor declaration. You must currently hold a Canadian passport issued after Jan 31, 2002, reside in Canada and were residing in Canada when you applied for your previous passport. A few other conditions apply.
http://www.ppt.gc.ca/forms/index.aspx?lang=e

The notice also has a reminder that Canadians traveling to the US by land or by sea are not required to carry a valid passport until the summer of 2008. However travel by air to the US requires a valid passport or a NEXUS membership card when used at a NEXUS kiosk. For a questionnaire to see whether you qualify, go to
http://www.ppt.gc.ca/index.aspx?lang=e

Pick your profile - living in Canada, etc. for the eligibility questionnaire for simplified renewal. There is also links to epass, the online service. There is also a link to service delay times depending on your location or whether you visit a passport office.
